North American Film Critics Association announces 2023 winners

The North American Film Critics Association met on Saturday, January 13 to hand out awards in 25 categories for the 2023 year in film. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led the way with seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Among its other awards, Oppenheimer won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey, Jr., Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Sound and Best Editing. It’s fellow mid-summer release, Barbie, also took home three awards, including Best Blockbuster, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

In the acting categories, Zac Efron took home Best Actor for his work in The Iron Claw, while Lily Gladstone took home the award for Best Actress for her work in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Da’Vine Joy Randolph was the winner in Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Holdovers.

A24 films were honored by the NAFCA as well, with Talk to Me winning the award for Best Horror Film and Past Lives winning for Best Independent Film and Best Screenplay. Meanwhile Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie earned the win for Best Documentary Film, while Anatomy of a Fall earned two awards for Best International Feature and Best Animal Performance for Snoop the Dog!

Among the other winners, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was named Best Animated Feature, Joy Ride took the award for Best Comedy Film and John Wick 4 was recognized for the Best Stunts. Meanwhile Rye Lane earned the award for Best Hidden Gem and Poor Things took home the award for Best Special Effects.
